In Histoire d’Haïti, Madiou continued to work as a Haitian author before combating the portraits of Haiti on the foundation of the country. It covers an important part when it writes the first national history complete by a Haitian author. The story was not only valuable to Haitians, for all Africans in the Diaspora. To do so, his work, Madiou watched French writings and oral stories. He interviewed former revolutionary veterans during his trip across the country with General Joseph Balthazar Inginac, Secretary General of President Jean-Pierre Boyer. Her story tried to repel the reputation of the black leader of the Haitian Revolution, especially to Toussaint Louverture, showing it as a rebellion against the terrible slavery oppression. Historian Beaubrun Ardouin, contrary to Madiou’s work, showed the Haitian Revolution in a different context of Latin America’s independence and refused to put him in a racial character. Ardouin tried to make Haiti come into the United States of Ameri...

Born in Port-au-Prince on 30 April 1814, Antoine Bernard Thomas Madiou was a Haitian historian. He left Haiti at 10 to go study in France at the “Collège Royal d’Angers.” He later received a Bachelor of Arts and a degree in Letters in Rennes, France. For 2 years, he attended the Law School of Paris before returning to Haiti. His work Histoire d’Haïti is the first complete history of Haiti and was considered one of the most valuable documents of Haitian history and literature. While in France, he met Isaac Louverture, son of the revolutionary hero Toussaint Louverture and over a decade later, he published Histoire d’Haïti which were 3 volumes covering Haiti’s history from 1492 to 1807, then published more volumes covering Haiti’s history up to 1846. In addition to his writing, Madiou served in various government positions and worked as Director of Le Moniteur, the official government publication, and was a contributor to Haiti’s small but vibrant press. – Né de parents aisés, le 30 ...

St-Marc is a commune of western Haiti, the 4th largest city of the country and the 2nd largest of the department of Artibonite after Gonaives. Its port is largely used and preferred due to the heavy congestion in Port-au-Prince, and its central location between major cities of the area which holds most of Haiti’s total population. It is located on the site of a Native Taïnos unfortified town of the 15th century that was at the northern limit of the caciquat of Xaragua. It used to be known as “Amani-y”. Its foundation dates back to the 17th century around 1695 by the French colonists. It is also celebrated every year on April 25, the same day as Mark the Evangelist’s feast day. It was raised to the rank of commune on Sept. 13, 1915. After seeing the fragility of the troops, after the battle of Crête-à-Pierrot, and letter correspondences with General Leclerc, who implied he would maintain liberty and equality for the population of the colony, General Christophe decided it would be better for the well-being of his people to submit to the colonial forces. Leclerc, had also suggested that Christophe could help them get Toussaint Louverture, that outraged him, and firmly declined that part of the offer. He told him that Louverture was his superior and his friend. On April 25 1802, he finally met Leclerc and submitted to him, hence gave up the Northern part of Haiti as well, that moved was perceived as treason, by Toussaint and weakened their resistance and left him powerless.

24 April 1966, the President for life, François Duvalier hosted the emperor of Ethiopia, Haile Selassie I, a.k.a. King of Kings (and the Lion of Judas). During the visit, Duvalier awarded Haile Selassie the Necklace of the Order of Jean-Jacques Dessalines the Great, and the emperor, in turn, bestowed upon Duvalier the Great Necklace of the Order of the Queen of Sheba. Haiti was part of many countries (Trinidad-Tobago, Jamaica) Selassie was visiting on his Caribbean goodwill tour, in an effort to renew the ancestral ties between Africa and the Caribbeans of African descent. He was the only head of state to visit Haiti during the presidency of François Duvalier. As a proponent of the black nationalist platform, Duvalier was a supporter of the Pan-African model of excellence, and welcomed Haile Selassie I with open arms. On 23 April 1876, he replaced Michel Domingue as the first president of the provisional government, before becoming President of Haiti non-provisionally on 17 July 1876. During Boisrond-Canal’s administration, tensions in domestic politics and foreign affairs grew, particularly because of the differences between liberal and nationalist parties in Parliament. Following a stormy debate in the House of Representatives on 30 June 1879, there were riots in Port-au-Prince in which the Liberal leader Jean-Pierre Boyer-Bazelais played a significant role. Although the government managed to restore law and order, Boisrond-Canal resigned as president on 17 July 1879. After his resignation, Boisrond-Canal left again in exile in Jamaica. FAUSTIN 1er. On 18 April 1852 at Port-au-Prince, both emperor and empress were crowned in an immense and lavish ceremony in emulation of the coronation of the Napoleon. The president of the Senate attached to the breast of the Emperor a large decoration, passed a chain about the neck of the Empress – and pronounced his address, to which His Majesty Faustin replied with spirit: “Vive la liberté, vive l’égalité!” (Gustave d’Alaux). The coronation is illustrated in the ‘Album Impériale d’Haïti’, engraved by Severyn, published New York, 1852 (available in the British Library). – When Jean Jacques Dessalines arrived in Cap-Haïtien, there were only isolated violent incidents throughout the city. However,...

Did You Know That Haiti Has Its Own Beer? Yes, Prestige Beer!

Did you know that Haiti has its own national beer brand? Well, did you? Yes, kreyolicious boys and girls, it sure does. And it’s called Prestige—a rather fitting name, I think. The beer is made and brewed in Haiti , according to the website Manman Pemba. And according to the beer’s website, it recently celebrated its 40th year of existence. When the owners had been at it for nearly 38 years, USA Today reported that Heinneken stepped in and threw in a $100 million investment into it. Ooh, look at the design of the bottle. Ooh. The beer itself has won many prestigious awards. You should look into buying it. Don’t drink? Buy it anyway, you can probably do some cool highlights with your hair with it. And also, didn’t I read somewhere or other that you can also massage your veins really good with beer? Prestige! Also, while you’re at it, watch this commercial I came across on Youtube about Prestige the beer. Photo Credit: Jumenes Coreus/Dezobri CLICK HERE TO READ OTHER ARTI...

Kreyolicious Interview: Naida Lynn, Singer-Songwriter, Part 1

Naida Lynn croons her original composition “Wise Words” amid playful guitar strings. If she wanted to, she could probably sing the track in French, Creole, or even Spanish. Her tongue can spin words in five languages, after all. Her multilingual abilities mirror her multi-style abilities when it comes to music. One minute you can pick up India Irie influence in Naida Lynn’s voice, and the next minute you can sniff Whitney Houston in her notes, and in the next song you can detect a Patti Austin-deepness. Kreyolicious: Tell us about yourself.  I am the happiest person I know! I love life, I love who I am, and I find joy in helping other people experience that reality too. Born and raised in South Florida, I am a first generation Haitian-American who speaks 5 languages. In the humblest sense, I have way too many talents and passions to choose just one. Because of that, much of my time is spent living fully, thinking deeply, and pursuing all of the beauties in life a...

Music Review: Alan Cave, Timeless, Volume 1

As promised, I am going to take a look at Timeless, Volume 1 by Alan Cave. If you missed the Kreyolicious review of Volume 2, CLICK HERE . CD Image via HMI PIX The song sequence strategy on this volume is very strong. Sa Wap Fè Avè’m [Whatcha Gonna Do With Me?] I truly like the vulnerability on this one. Whatcha gonna do with me…the singer’s delivery is flawless on this track. And, so much begging and pleading. Definitely my type of song. About time a man is suffering! God knows that women go through so much when it comes to love. But you almost feel sorry (slightly) for the narrator, when he howls, “Map mande’w ki sa wap fè avè’m. M’pèdi lanmou” in this super-pathetic voice. Whappen [What Happened] Two things can happen with the song that opens an album. Scenario one: it’s really boring and plain and its just there as a filler. Scenario two: it’s going to end up being one of the best tracks on the album, and is placed strategically at the beginning of the record to make y...

How Belle VueTours is Promoting Haiti Through Historical Tourism

Haiti tourism company Belle Vue Tours is out to promote Haiti…its cuisine, its beaches, but in particular its history. The company’s founders created what they term the Christophienne Tour—which is a six-days-five nights excursions series centered around the life of Grenada-born Henri Christophe , who became king of Haiti in 1811. According to historical accounts, Henri made the former Cap Francais (now Cap Haitien) the capital of his kingdom, and this is where Belle Vue Tours brings its tourism clients. For four to five hours, Haiti tourists are escorted around Cap Haitien, and the tour includes stops at the National History Park, Citadel Henry (also called Citadel Laferriere), and the San Souci Palace, Henri Christophe’s once sprawling palace. BV Tours clients interested in historical artifacts also view 18th century artillery from France, England, Spain, and Italy purchased by the king in case a European power approached the island. Money from 19th Century Haiti…. Here are some ...

Interview: Teen Singing Sensation Julie Marie Answers 20 Questions

Teen singer Julie Marie is like most 12th graders who are home-schooled, except that, well, she spends her weekends doing the most interesting things. Like performing “Haiti Girl” in front of fans at BET Experience, and being interviewed by MTV. Interesting things, as in performing in stadiums around the nation, opening for the R&B/pop group act Mindless Behavior. Born in New Hampshire to an American mom and a Haitian dad, the singer-songwriter has already released her first EP entitled “The Movement.” And it’s her voice behind the Generation Z love anthem “Generation”. Kreyolicious: First off, how long have you been singing? I’ve been singing professionally for about two years now. But I started singing in church since I was 9 years. Kreyolicious: While you were singing in church, did you find yourself struck by the voices of any singers in particular? When I was about 10, I went to my first concert, and it happened to be Alicia Keys. When I saw her up on stage doing her th...

Singer Devyn Rose On Music, Creativity And The State Of The Industry

Before you even know what she sounds like, Devyn Rose catches your attention. Firstly, her clothes. They are best described as New Bohemian, very hip and dope—a little bit vintage, a bit flashy Nineties, and a slight dash of contemporary. She also borrows from other centuries—heavy eyelashes that could have been worn by Hatsheput or a maiden from an Egyptian dynasty, and a string of earth-tone chains that could have adorned the neck of someone from the Grecian era—say…Penelope of Ithaca. And then there’s the way her skin glows. Maybe it’s because her powerful pipes make her shake down to her pores. But, nah; the glow is probably from the fact that she’s a vegan. Yes, Kreyolicious ones, Devyn Rose does not indulge in unhealthy eats. Sure her outfits are pure coolness, but after hearing her, you’ll probably agree that her voice is the best thing about her. The natural hair-sporting singer has been singing since she was a little girl. She loves to get down on the dance floor, and occas...

Music Review, Kreyol La, Triye

Song: Triye. Artist: Kreyol La According to the relationship coach Bruce Muzik , relationships have 5 stages. The song “Triye”, by this band named Kreyol La reflects the second stage—the power struggle stage. According to Mr. Bruce Muzik (interesting that this should be his last name), couples going through that particular stage tend to try to change their partners. And, when the change they try to impose on their partner doesn’t happen, they punish their partners. At which point, there’s all sort of havoc. What’s more, contends Bruce Muzik, couples in the second stage resort to focusing on a partner’s flaws and shortcomings and begin to withdraw emotionally from the relationship. This song “Triye”, credited to singer-songwriter Joe Zenny, Jr., practically describes this stage word for word. The first couple of times I listened to “Triye”, I thought it was preaching that people should settle and put up with a partner’s crap (infidelity, physical abuse, etc). But that isn’t what ...

The Entrepreneur Behind Kassav Catering on Being A Chef And Having A Passion For Cuisine

If Chef McAlex can thank one person for the fact that he’s a successful chef today, it should be his aunt Anise. Growing up in Haiti, her dishes stroked his palate and made him realize how much care and patience goes into making a great dish. Now the owner of his own catering company, Kassav Catering in Tampa, Florida, the caterer-chef applies the same passion when he’s seasoning and flavoring his dishes. “I feel at peace and centered in the kitchen,” he explains. “There’s no other room in the house that speaks to me than that particular room. Some regard food as a source of nutrition but to me food is an art, an expression of culture, a creation born of labor and love.” Love. Now, that’s something that goes into everything Chef McAlex creates for his clients in the Tampa Bay area. Whether it’s barbecued chicken for a backyard affair, or a fancy seafood dinner for a special occasion, the chef makes certain that he serves food that will be talked about long after it’s been digested. ...

Chris Brown and Lil Wayne in Haiti-#Team Haiti Week In Review

Chris Brown and Lil Wayne in Haiti? The news of these two pop stars performing a concert in Haiti was the talk of the e-parlors of #TeamHaiti. It all started when this little flyer started coming up in posts on Instagram, showing the elevated faces of Chris Brown and Lil Wayne. Then it spread on Twitter and Facebook. “It”—as in the news that Chris Brown and Lil Wayne would actually be performing for the first time in Haiti. Now, with the repatriation of Haitians and Dominican-Haitians having been of great concern, some wondered if the concert was a good idea. Yet others argued that in spite of problems, life must go on—and the concert should be held—regardless of the opinions of some. Big O Productions—the concert promoter responsible for the concert—took to the pages of Haiti’s daily Le Nouvelliste to clarify several misconceptions/misunderstandings about the pending concert. First and foremost, it was revealed that it was Kasseem Dean, better known to us folks as Swizz Beatz ,...

Zoe Poze, The Haitian-American Comedian Who Sends Folks Rolling

Zoe Poze is what his fans on social media know him as. But before he was sending them into loud guffaws, he was known as simply Clarck among friends and family. But yeah, back to the Zoe Poze of the present. At Twenty-Two years old, he rules as one of the most popular Haitian-American comedians on social media. He was one of the featured comedians at the Haitian Pride Festival in Lauderhill, Florida recently along with colleagues like Plus Daddy, Haitian Husbands, and Success. The week before that, he was a part of comedy tour that brought him to New York and New Jersey. His success isn’t just on social media, thank you very much. And it isn’t necessarily just in the comedy sector either. Movie directors call on him to MC their movie premieres, and cultural organizations bring him in as host to pull in Haitian-American collegiates to their events. Nothing is built overnight—not even Noah’s Ark. So, how did Zoe Poze become Zoe Poze? Kreyolicious: Tell us more about how you became ...
