On October 17th 1806, Dessalines was assassinated north of Port-au-Prince, at Pont Larnage (now known as Pont-Rouge), on his way to fight the rebels. His assassination did not solve the tensions within the Haitian government, as his removal created a civil war and a temporary partition of Haiti between Alexandre Pétion and Henri Christophe. The circumstances of his death are uncertain. The mob desecrated and disfigured his remains, which were abandoned on Government Square. There was a lot of resistance to providing him with a proper burial, but Défilée (Dédée Bazile), a black woman from a humble background, took the mutilated body of the Emperor and buried it. A monument at the northern entrance of the Haitian capital marks the place where the Emperor was killed. – 17 oktòb 1806, yo te assassine Dessalines nan nò Pòtoprens, nan Pont Larnage (kounye a yo rele Pont-Rouge), sou wout pou l te al goumen kont rebèl yo. Today is a celebratory day for all the haitian people around the world as we celebrate the Haitian Flag Day. The Haitian flag was adopted on May 18th 1803, on the last day of the Congress of Arcahaie. Haitian lore holds that the newly appointed revolutionary leader Jean-Jacques Dessalines created the flag by taking a French tricolor and ripping out the white center, which he discarded. He then asked Catherine Flon (p.4) to sew the remaining bands together. The white pale removed, the blue was taken to represent Haiti’s black citizens and the red the gens de couleur.

Born in Cap-Henry, actual Cap-Haïtien, he was the son of a high-ranking official in the regime of Henri Christophe, and Blézine Georges, Christophe’s illegitimate daughter. Alexis joined the army in the 1830s, serving under President Jean-Louis Pierrot, his father-in-law. He became President on 21 December 1902 at the age of 82. Alexis held on to power for the next six years but his regime was plagued by rebellion. During his presidency, he judged and condemned all statesmen who stole state’s money in 1904. In January 1908, he proclaimed himself President for Life. Firmin’s supporters launched a new revolt against Alexis. A famine in the south that same year led to violent food riots and a new rebellion, this time from the south, led by General François Antoine Simon. Ousted from power on 2 December 1908, Alexis went into exile in Jamaica and later relocated to New Orleans with his family, where he died on 1 May 1910. – Né à Cap-Henry, l’actuel Cap-Haïtien, il était le fils d’un hau...

Haitian Heritage Month is a celebration in the United States of Haitian heritage and culture. It was first celebrated in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1998. Tele Kreyol, one of the Boston Haitian Access Television programs, celebrated the whole month of May with a series of programs on Haitian history, culture, and contributions to the world. Its celebration has continued with such activities as parades, flag raisings, and exhibits organized by Haitian-Americans United, Inc. (H.A.U.) in collaboration with several Haitian organizations in the New England area.It has now spread to several other cities and states such as Florida, New York, and is recognized by political figures. The celebration is an expansion of the Haitian Flag Day, a major patriotic day celebration in Haiti and the Diaspora. Haitian President Dumarsais Estimé started the Flag Day celebration in many cities in Haiti in the 1930s, when he was minister of education under President Sténio Vincent. In Histoire d’Haïti, Madiou continued to work as a Haitian author before combating the portraits of Haiti on the foundation of the country. It covers an important part when it writes the first national history complete by a Haitian author. The story was not only valuable to Haitians, for all Africans in the Diaspora. To do so, his work, Madiou watched French writings and oral stories. He interviewed former revolutionary veterans during his trip across the country with General Joseph Balthazar Inginac, Secretary General of President Jean-Pierre Boyer. Her story tried to repel the reputation of the black leader of the Haitian Revolution, especially to Toussaint Louverture, showing it as a rebellion against the terrible slavery oppression. Historian Beaubrun Ardouin, contrary to Madiou’s work, showed the Haitian Revolution in a different context of Latin America’s independence and refused to put him in a racial character. After seeing the fragility of the troops, after the battle of Crête-à-Pierrot, and letter correspondences with General Leclerc, who implied he would maintain liberty and equality for the population of the colony, General Christophe decided it would be better for the well-being of his people to submit to the colonial forces.
